630 A MCCB with ETU550 — what the ratings mean for fit
The Siemens 3VA2463-5JP42-0AA0 is a SENTRON molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated for continuous current of 630 A at 40 °C, with a clear temperature derating curve: 600 A at 45 °C, 570 A at 50 °C, 540 A at 55 °C, 510 A at 60 °C, 480 A at 65 °C, and 450 A at 70 °C. That means if your panel ambient runs hot — common in enclosed switchgear or near transformer vaults — you need to size upstream for the lower effective rating, not the 630 A nameplate. The ETU550 electronic trip unit handles adjustable overload and short-circuit protection curves; the N-conductor protection is adjustable OFF or 20% to 100% of the phase setting. Breaking capacity is rated per voltage: 187 kA at 240 V AC, 121 kA at 415 V and 440 V, 75.6 kA at 500 V, and 9 kA at 690 V. For a 480 V distribution panel (common in North American industrial plants), the 75.6 kA at 500 V bracket covers most fault-current scenarios; the 9 kA at 690 V tells you this breaker is not the primary choice for 690 V motor circuits unless the available fault current is well under that threshold.
Panel integration — footprint and wiring
Mounting dimensions: 184 mm wide, 248 mm tall, 110 mm deep. That 184 mm width for a 4-pole 630 A frame is standard for the SENTRON 3VA2 platform — it occupies the same footprint as other 3VA2 breakers in the same frame size, so a panel laid out for a 3VA2 400 A unit will accept this 630 A version without re-drilling the mounting plate. The IP40 front protection means it's suitable for enclosed distribution boards; not rated for washdown or outdoor exposure. Rated insulation voltage Ui is 800 V.
