630 A MCCB for line protection — what the ratings mean for fit
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA2463-6HL32-0KL0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker rated for 630 A continuous current at 40 °C, sized for main feeder or large sub-distribution protection in industrial panels. The 242 kA breaking capacity at 240 V means it can safely interrupt fault currents up to that level without cascading upstream — a critical spec for high-fault installations like transformer secondaries or large motor control centers. At 415 V and 440 V the interrupting rating holds at 187 kA, dropping to 121 kA at 500 V and 9 kA at 690 V; the 690 V figure is the ceiling where the breaker still clears a fault, but the available fault current at that voltage must stay under 9 kA. Thermal derating is published across the full ambient range: 630 A at 40 °C, 612 A at 45 °C, 593 A at 50 °C, 575 A at 55 °C, 557 A at 60 °C, 538 A at 65 °C, and 520 A at 70 °C. For a panel that runs warm — say 50 °C inside the enclosure — the breaker is good for 593 A continuous, not the full 630 A. That derating curve is the number to use for NEC ampacity calculations, not the 40 °C nameplate. The adjustable trip range spans 945 A minimum to 5 670 A maximum, giving selectivity headroom downstream. Maximum power loss is 162 W at rated load — relevant for enclosure thermal management if the breaker is in a sealed cabinet with other heat sources.
Auxiliary and release configuration
This variant ships with a shunt trip release (STL) and an auxiliary switch block comprising 2 auxiliary switches, 1 trip alarm switch, and 1 electrical alarm switch HQ. The basic switch is order code 3VA2463-6HL32-0AA0. No undervoltage release, no ground-fault monitoring, and no communication function are fitted on this version.
Panel integration — dimensions and environment
Footprint: 138 mm wide, 248 mm high, 110 mm deep. Mounts in a standard distribution panel or MCC bucket; the 138 mm width is three 45 mm pole pitches, so it occupies the same space as a typical 3-pole frame. Operating ambient range is -25 °C to 70 °C; storage range is -40 °C to 80 °C.
