630 A MCCB with ETU850 — what the ratings mean for the panel
The Siemens 3VA2463-6KP32-0AA0 is a 3-pole SENTRON molded case circuit breaker rated for 630 A continuous current at 40 °C, with an ETU850 electronic trip unit that is adjustable between 945 A and 5 670 A — that is 1.5x to 9x the continuous rating, giving you selectivity headroom for feeder or main breaker duty in a 480 V or 600 V distribution panel. The interrupting capacity tells the real story for fault coordination: 242 kA at 240 V, 187 kA at 415 V and 440 V, 121 kA at 500 V, and 9 kA at 690 V. At 480 V (common in North American industrial plants) the curve interpolates between the 440 V and 500 V figures — still well above what most service-entrance transformers can deliver, so it will hold its SCCR without cascading upstream. Thermal derating is published per the datasheet: 630 A at 40 °C, 600 A at 45 °C, 570 A at 50 °C, 540 A at 55 °C, 510 A at 60 °C, 480 A at 65 °C, and 450 A at 70 °C. If the panel ambient runs above 40 °C, the continuous rating drops by roughly 30 A per 5 °C rise — factor that into the load schedule before committing the BOM line. The ETU850 trip unit includes a communication function, which means it can report status and fault events over the SENTRON bus system — useful for a plant-wide power monitoring scheme where you want to know which breaker tripped without walking the panel line.
Panel integration — dimensions and mounting
The breaker measures 110 mm deep, 138 mm wide, and 248 mm tall. It mounts on a DIN rail or directly to a backplate via the fixed lugs. The 138 mm width is standard for a 3-pole SENTRON frame at this rating — it will drop into a panel cutout designed for the 3VA2 family without re-drilling. IP40 on the front means the breaker face is protected against tools and small wires entering the enclosure, but the panel itself needs to provide the overall IP rating for the environment — this is a panel-mounted component, not a standalone enclosure. Maximum power loss is 162 W at rated current — that heat has to be dissipated inside the enclosure. If the panel is sealed or densely packed, check the thermal derating curve above 40 °C ambient to avoid nuisance tripping.
Delta against a common sibling — 3VA2116-5JP32-0AE0
The 3VA2116-5JP32-0AE0 is a smaller-frame 3VA2 breaker with a lower continuous rating and a different trip unit. The 3VA2463-6KP32-0AA0 carries 630 A continuous versus the 3VA2116's lower rating, and its ETU850 electronic trip offers adjustable long-time, short-time, instantaneous, and ground-fault protection with communication — the 3VA2116 typically uses a thermal-magnetic or simpler electronic trip without comms. If the BOM calls for 630 A feeder protection with monitoring capability, the 3VA2463 is the correct frame; the 3VA2116 will not physically fit the same bus bars or handle the same fault current.
