What the ratings mean for your panel
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA2463-8HL42-0AA0 is a 4-pole molded case circuit breaker rated for 630 A continuous current at 40 °C, with an ETU320 electronic trip unit designed for line protection. The 630 A frame size means it handles the full load of a large distribution feeder or a heavy industrial load center without needing external current transformers up to that point. The ETU320 provides adjustable overload and short-circuit protection curves, so you set the trip thresholds to match your downstream cable and load — not a fixed thermal-magnetic characteristic. Breaking capacity is the real differentiator here: 440 kA at 240 V AC and 330 kA at 415 V AC. That puts this breaker in the high-interrupting category — it clears a bolted fault on a large transformer secondary or a capacitor bank without the arc re-striking. At 690 V it still holds 52.5 kA, which covers most 690 V industrial distribution systems in mining or marine applications. The 800 V rated insulation voltage (Ui) confirms the internal clearances are sized for 690 V line-to-line systems with margin. Thermal derating is published across the operating range: 630 A at 40 °C, 612 A at 45 °C, 593 A at 50 °C, 575 A at 55 °C, 557 A at 60 °C, 538 A at 65 °C, and 520 A at 70 °C. If your enclosure ambient runs at 50 °C, you must size the downstream load to 593 A or less — the breaker itself does not trip, but the internal temperature rise at full rating exceeds the design margin. The maximum power loss of 162 W at rated current is the heat you need to vent through the enclosure.
Panel integration and mounting
Dimensions: 248 mm height, 184 mm width, 110 mm depth. The 4-pole frame at 184 mm wide occupies 7.24 inches of panel-mount width. IP40 on the front face. Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C, storage from -40 °C to 80 °C. The -25 °C lower limit means it can sit in an unheated electrical room in cold climates, but the breaker mechanism may need to be exercised before closing at extreme low end. No undervoltage release and no communication function on this variant — it is a standalone line-protection breaker without remote trip or monitoring.
