What this breaker does on the line
The Siemens 3VA4140-4ED34-3AA0 is a 3-pole circuit breaker from the 3VA4 UL Frame 125 series, rated at 40 A with a fixed overload setting (Ir=40 A) and a short-circuit trip threshold of 10× In (Ii=10 x In). Its breaking capacity class S delivers 25 kA at 480 V — enough to interrupt a hard fault on a 480 V distribution bus without cascading upstream, provided the available fault current at the panel doesn't exceed that figure. The TM210 thermal-magnetic release means the thermal element handles overloads and the magnetic element clears short-circuits; no electronic adjustment, so what you order is what protects the circuit. The 25 kA @ 480 V SCCR is the key coordination number for the panel designer. If the utility transformer can deliver more than 25 kA symmetrical at the breaker line terminals, this breaker is not the right series — you need the higher-breaking class H or L within the 3VA family. Below that threshold, it coordinates cleanly with downstream branch breakers sized for the load.
Lifecycle and procurement posture
RoHS compliant since 13-05-19. REACH Article 33 disclosure applies: Lead CAS-No. 7439-92-1 > 0.1% w/w in certain components. Export controls are AL:N / ECCN:EAR99 — no special licensing for most destinations, but verify against your end-use if it's a controlled facility.
