Breaking capacity and derating — what matters for fit
The 3VM1116-3EE42-0AA0: Breaking capacity varies sharply with system voltage: 76 kA at 240 V, 53 kA at 415 V, 32 kA at 440 V, and 12 kA at 500 V. That 12 kA at 500 V is the number to check if you're on a 480 V or 500 V distribution — it's the limiting case for fault current withstand. Thermal derating is flat from 40 °C to 50 °C at 160 A, then drops to 158 A at 55 °C, 155 A at 60 °C, 153 A at 65 °C, and 150 A at 70 °C. If your panel ambient runs above 50 °C, you lose 10 A by 70 °C — factor that into continuous load planning.
Panel fit and integration
Dimensions: 130 mm height, 101.6 mm width, 70 mm depth. The 70 mm depth is shallow enough for most 200 mm deep enclosures without a gland-plate conflict. IP40 on the front — fine for a clean indoor panel, not for washdown zones. Rated insulation voltage is 800 V. Power loss at max rating is 38 W — negligible for panel thermal budgeting unless you're stacking several in a sealed box. Operating temperature range is -25 °C to 70 °C; storage from -40 °C to 80 °C. The TM220 trip unit is thermal-magnetic — no electronic adjustment, no communication function, no undervoltage release or ground-fault monitoring on this variant.
