What it is and what it does
The Siemens SENTRON 3VM1180-3ED16-0AA2 is a 1-pole molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) rated for line protection, with a TM210 thermal-magnetic release set at 80 A continuous current (Iu). Its LI protective function means it provides instantaneous short-circuit protection (Ii = 10 x In) plus fixed thermal overload protection (Ir = 80 A, not adjustable). Breaking capacity class N delivers 53 kA at 240 V AC and 7.5 kA at 415 V AC — enough for most commercial and light industrial panelboards where fault current stays under those thresholds. The frame is rated for a maximum of 160 A, so this 80 A unit leaves headroom if you ever need to uprate the trip within the same frame size.
Thermal performance and derating
The breaker carries 80 A continuously from 40 °C up to 50 °C ambient. Above that, derating kicks in: 78 A at 55 °C, 77 A at 60 °C, 75 A at 65 °C, and 74 A at 70 °C. If your panel runs hot — say near a drive or transformer — factor in that 74 A ceiling at 70 °C rather than the nominal 80 A.
Integration and connections
Main circuit connects via box terminals on the front face, accepting solid or stranded copper. No auxiliary contacts, no motor drive, no communication module — this is a bare breaker for straightforward overcurrent protection. IP40 on the front means it's protected against tools and small wires poking in, but not against water. Use inside a panel, not exposed to washdown.
