DC smoothing choke for 16.67 Hz traction or DC-link ripple filtering
The Siemens SIDAC 4EM5000-0JB00 is a single-phase smoothing choke rated for 40 A DC continuous current and 0.7 mH inductance. It carries a 690 V insulation voltage rating and is designed for an operating frequency of 16.67 Hz — the standard for railway auxiliary and traction supplies. The 21 W coil power loss and 0.4 W iron-core loss define the thermal budget; the winding is Class B (130 °C rise) per IEC 60085. This is an open-frame (IP00) component with screw-type terminals, intended for panel or chassis mounting where the enclosure provides the IP rating.
The 40 A DC rating is the maximum continuous current the choke can carry without exceeding the Class B temperature rise at 50 °C ambient. The 0.7 mH inductance value determines the ripple attenuation at 16.67 Hz — for a given DC-link voltage and load current, this inductance sets the ripple current amplitude. At higher switching frequencies (typical of modern IGBT drives) the choke still filters, but the core loss curve changes; the 16.67 Hz operating frequency is the design point. The 690 V insulation voltage means it can be used in 400 V or 480 V DC-link circuits with standard margins. The 0.115 m depth, 0.097 m width, and 0.111 m height footprint fits a compact panel layout, but the IP00 construction means the installer must provide the enclosure's ingress protection.
Mounts on a chassis or sub-panel via its own mounting base — no DIN-rail clip. The screw-type terminals accept ring or fork lugs; torque to the manufacturer's specification for the terminal size. The IP00 rating means the choke must be inside an enclosure rated for the environment (IP54 panel for a dry industrial area, IP65 for washdown zones). Keep at least 50 mm clearance around the choke for natural convection cooling; the 21 W coil loss plus 0.4 W iron loss totals about 21.4 W to dissipate.
