Product details

The Siemens 4EM5005-8CB00 is a single-phase commutating choke (Kommut.-Drossel f. Stromrichter) designed for converter applications. It sits on the AC line side of a variable-frequency drive or DC drive converter to limit the rate of rise of current during commutation — reducing harmonic stress on the rectifier diodes and smoothing the DC-link ripple. The 22.4 A maximum current and 20.16 A rated current (at 400 V AC, 50 Hz) size it for a 1-phase converter input drawing roughly that load; the 2.2 mH inductance and 4 % relative inductive voltage drop define the impedance the converter sees at the switching frequency.

Rated at 400 V AC operating voltage and 50 Hz, this choke is built for European-standard 1-phase line supplies feeding a converter input. The 22.4 A maximum (Ithmax) is the thermal limit under worst-case continuous load; the 20.16 A rated current (I LN) is the nominal design point where the choke's temperature rise stays within its thermal class B insulation (IEC 60085). The 27.4 A DC-rated value tells you the same core can handle a higher DC current if the converter's DC link is the load path — useful if you are using it as a DC-link choke in a single-phase rectifier circuit. Power loss splits between the coil (18 W) and the iron core (19.7 W), totalling about 38 W at rated load. That heat must be dissipated into the surrounding air — the IP00 enclosure means no housing, so the choke is intended for mounting inside a cabinet where ambient stays at or below the 40 °C rated ambient temperature. Screw-type terminals accept the main circuit conductors; no special tooling needed for panel wiring.

Deployment context: panel integration

At 115 mm deep, 97 mm wide, and 111 mm tall, the choke occupies a compact footprint for its current class — about the size of a small contactor. Screw terminals accept up to 4 mm² stranded or solid wire (typical for a 20 A circuit). Mounting is via the integral foot or through the core bolt holes; no DIN-rail adapter is standard, so panel-mounting with M4 or M5 hardware is the expected method.
