What it is and what it does
The Siemens 4EP3901-3DS00 is a three-phase commutating choke (line reactor) designed for converter input circuits. It smooths current ripple and limits di/dt during commutation, protecting the converter's rectifier diodes and reducing harmonic distortion on the line side. Rated for 40.5 A continuous AC current (45 A maximum) at 500 V AC, 50 Hz, with an inductance of 0.81 mH and a relative inductive voltage drop of 4% at rated conditions. The DC-rated current is 55.1 A, reflecting the higher RMS content in DC-link applications.
What the ratings mean for fit
The 4% voltage drop at rated current is the key sizing parameter: it defines the choke's impedance at line frequency. A 4% drop is typical for input line reactors in variable-frequency drives, providing enough inductance to limit harmonic current without excessive voltage loss that would reduce motor torque. Power losses split between the coil (70 W) and iron core (21.6 W), total 91.6 W at rated load. Thermal class B (130 °C) insulation per IEC 60085 means the winding can sustain 130 °C hot-spot temperature continuously — adequate for a 40 °C ambient with natural convection in a ventilated cabinet. IP00 open-frame construction means no enclosure; the choke must be mounted inside a panel or cabinet that provides touch protection and environmental sealing. Screw-type terminals accept standard power wiring — no special lug kits needed.
Where it goes in the panel
Mounts on the panel floor or a sub-panel via its core mounting feet. Dimensions: 0.219 m wide, 0.179 m tall, 0.123 m deep — allow clearance around the IP00 frame for airflow and to avoid magnetic coupling to adjacent steel structures. Wire the three phases in series between the AC line and the converter input. The 4% voltage drop is additive to the converter's own drop; verify the drive's minimum line voltage specification is still met under full load.
