Application fit — commutating choke for 3-phase converter drives
The Siemens 4EU2722-2AA00-0AA0 is a 3-phase commutating choke (also called a line reactor or converter choke) designed to sit between the AC supply and a variable-frequency drive or DC drive converter. Its job is to limit the rate of current rise (di/dt) during commutation, reduce harmonic distortion on the line side, and protect the converter's input rectifier from transient overcurrents. Rated for a 400 V AC 3-phase supply at 50 Hz, it carries a maximum continuous current of 224 A and a rated current of 201.6 A — the rated figure is the one to size against your drive's nominal input current.
Thermal and mounting constraints
The thermal class H (IEC 60085) insulation system allows a 180 °C hot-spot temperature, which is standard for industrial chokes that run hot under full load. At the rated 40 °C ambient, expect 176 W of copper loss in the coil and 90 W of iron-core loss, totalling about 266 W of heat to dissipate inside the enclosure. The flat-type terminals for the main circuit accept busbar or cable lugs; plan for adequate clearance around the 0.27 m width, 0.248 m height, and 0.187 m depth when laying out the panel.
DC-rated capability for dual-purpose circuits
While primarily specified for AC operation, the 4EU2722-2AA00-0AA0 also carries a DC rated value of 274.5 A. This makes it usable on the DC link of a drive or in a DC-fed converter application, provided the voltage and frequency conditions are respected. The AC-rated inductance and voltage drop figures still govern the AC-side performance; the DC rating is a secondary capability for circuits that see both AC line and DC bus conditions.
