Commutating choke for converter applications
The Siemens 4EU3022-1CA00-0AA0 is a 3-phase commutating choke (commutating reactor) designed for use with line-commutated converters and drives. It limits the rate of rise of fault currents and reduces harmonic distortion on the DC link. Rated for a continuous current of 252 A (maximum 280 A) at 690 V AC, 50 Hz, with a peak current capability of 350 A.
The 280 A maximum (I_thmax) is the thermal limit for short-duration overload, typically during motor starting or converter inrush. The 350 A peak current is the non-repetitive surge rating; the choke must not see this level repeatedly. At DC rated value, the choke handles 343.1 A, so it can also serve in DC-link applications where the converter output is rectified. Power loss splits into 220 W in the coil (copper losses) and 102 W in the iron core (hysteresis and eddy-current losses), totalling 322 W at rated load. Thermal class H insulation (180 °C) gives headroom for peak loads, but the 40 °C ambient rating is the baseline; derate above that.
Dimensions are 0.3 m wide, 0.269 m high, 0.211 m deep — a substantial block that needs a dedicated mounting footprint in the panel. The main circuit connection uses flat-type terminals (bus-bar or cable lug compatible), not screw-clamp or spring-cage. No DIN-rail clip; the choke is bolted directly to a mounting plate or chassis. The IP00 enclosure means the live terminals are exposed — the panel door must be interlocked or the choke placed in a locked compartment to meet touch-safe requirements.
