D-curve and derating — the real selection numbers
The D-curve (5-10× In magnetic trip) is designed for loads with a high starting surge. At 0.5 A, that magnetic pickup sits between 2.5 A and 5 A — enough to pass a motor inrush but still fast on a hard short. Temperature derating is significant: the breaker carries 0.5 A at 30 °C, drops to 0.47 A at 40 °C, 0.46 A at 45 °C, and 0.43 A at 55 °C.
