The Siemens 5SM1616-0FD is a Type AC FI-PROTECTOR residual current device (RCD) — the classic sinusoidal AC-sensitive trip unit for general-purpose earth-leakage protection. Its 63 A rated current covers main incomers or sub-feed circuits up to that continuous load; the 0.3 A (300 mA) rated residual current (IΔn) is the trip threshold for earth faults, commonly specified for fire-protection or non-personal-protection circuits where a higher threshold avoids nuisance tripping on leakage from fixed equipment. The 2-pole (1P+N) construction switches line and neutral, fitting single-phase 230 V supplies. The 2.5 TE width (about 45 mm) on a DIN rail means it occupies two and a half 18 mm module spaces in the distribution board — a compact footprint for a 63 A device. Type AC detection means the device responds to sinusoidal AC residual currents only. It is the most common type for standard building installations where no pulsed DC or smooth DC fault currents are expected. For circuits with variable-speed drives, LED lighting, or other electronics that can generate pulsed DC leakage, a Type A or Type F RCD is required instead.
Snap-on DIN-rail mounting for the 2.5 TE width. The 63 A rating means the incoming cable section and busbar system must be sized for that current; the 0.3 A IΔn threshold is a coordination point with upstream and downstream RCDs — typically a 300 mA device is installed as a delayed or selective type to coordinate with 30 mA final-circuit RCDs.
