What it is and what it does
The Siemens 5SM3417-6 is a SENTRON 5SM3-series residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) — an instantaneous Type A device that detects sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC fault currents. Rated 80 A at 40 °C and 230 V AC at 50 Hz, it clears ground faults up to its 10 kA short-circuit current rating without upstream coordination changes. Two poles, 2.5 width units wide on a DIN rail, so it fits standard 36 mm-wide panel slots.
Ratings and what they mean for fit
The 80 A rating holds at 40 °C and 45 °C without derating, then drops linearly to 56 A at 70 °C. If your panel ambient runs above 45 °C, you lose roughly 6 A per 5 °C step — plan the thermal budget accordingly. The 10 kA SCCR at 230 V AC means the RCCB safely interrupts fault currents up to that level without welding contacts or cascading damage upstream. Type A detection covers both sine-wave and pulsed DC faults, which is the minimum for circuits with single-phase rectifiers or switched-mode supplies.
Mounting and integration
Mounts on a DIN rail (REG profile) and accepts conductors from 1.5 to 25 mm² solid or stranded. The 70 mm depth and 90 mm height fit standard enclosures.
