Arc-fault detection unit block for MCB 5SY60
The Siemens 5SM6011-1 is a SENTRON arc-fault detection device (AFDD) block designed to snap onto a 5SY60 miniature circuit breaker, forming a combined arc-fault / overcurrent protective device. Rated 16 A at 230 V AC, it detects both series arcs (1 A to 20 A) and parallel arcs (50 A to 500 A) — the series range covers loose connections and frayed conductors in the load circuit, while the parallel range catches line-to-neutral or line-to-ground faults. The 2-pole (1P+N) unit occupies a single modular width (36 mm) on DIN rail and mounts in any position, making it a straightforward retrofit into existing 5SY60-based panels.
What the arc ratings mean for fit
The series arc minimum of 1 A means the unit can detect a high-impedance arc — the kind that doesn't draw enough current to trip a standard MCB but still generates enough heat to start a fire. The parallel arc maximum of 500 A covers the full prospective fault current a 16 A circuit can deliver at 230 V. This is a detection block, not a standalone device: it requires the paired 5SY60 MCB to interrupt the fault current once the AFDD signals it. The 10 000 switching cycles mechanical service life matches the MCB's endurance, so the pair can be treated as a single maintenance item.
Mounts on DIN rail (REG) per; installation depth is 70 mm. The 36 mm width (1 MW) matches the 5SY60 MCB it clips to — no extra rail space beyond the breaker itself. IP20 with connected protective device and conductors, so it belongs inside a distribution board or enclosure, not in a wet or dusty location.
