E Characteristic and Application
The E tripping characteristic is a selective (time-delayed) curve, designed for main incomer or sub-distribution positions where coordination with downstream MCBs is required. It allows a short delay before tripping on overload, so a fault on a branch circuit clears at the downstream breaker first — keeping the main bus live. This makes the 5SP3840-3 suited for residential building incomers and infrastructure distribution boards, as the manufacturer specifies.
At 4.5 modular width units, it occupies about 81 mm of rail space — plan your enclosure fill accordingly. The integrated locking slide accepts a padlock, wire seal, or cable tie for lockout/tagout. Infeed can be at the box terminal from any direction, simplifying busbar routing.
IP40 with connected conductors — protected against solid objects over 1 mm, no water ingress protection, so mount inside a weatherproof enclosure for outdoor use. Shock resistance tested to 30 g, 11 ms duration, 3 impacts; vibration per IEC 60068-2-6 at 2 g, 5–150 Hz sweep. Mechanical service life is 20,000 operating cycles typical. Overvoltage category IV and pollution degree 3 — suitable for main distribution boards with high surge exposure.
