What it is and what it does
The Siemens 5SU1654-7KV16 is a combined residual-current device and miniature circuit breaker — an FI/LS protector — in a single 70 mm wide module. It integrates Type A earth-leakage detection (300 mA IΔn) with a 10 kA breaking-capacity C‑characteristic 16 A overcurrent trip, all in a 1+N-pole format. Type A means it catches pulsating DC fault currents on top of sinusoidal AC leakage, which matters for modern loads with half-wave rectification (switched-mode supplies, variable-speed drives, washing machines). The C‑curve (5–10× In magnetic trip) handles motor inrush and transformer energization without nuisance tripping.
Where it fits in the panel
The 70 mm width (4 TE on a standard DIN rail) occupies one full module position in a Siemens distribution board or any 18 mm pitch enclosure. It snaps onto the DIN rail and terminates with the incoming supply on the top busbar and the outgoing circuit on the bottom load terminal. No separate RCD and MCB means one less wiring step and one less DIN slot used — useful when panel fill factor is tight.
What the ratings mean for the buyer
The 300 mA residual sensitivity is a deliberate choice: it's higher than the 30 mA required for personal shock protection, so this unit is intended for fire protection or equipment protection on circuits where a 30 mA device would nuisance-trip (e.g., long cable runs with natural leakage, or industrial machinery with filtering). The 10 kA breaking capacity at 230/400 V means it can safely interrupt a bolted fault up to 10 kA without rupturing — adequate for most sub-distribution boards downstream of a larger upstream breaker. The C16 rating (16 A, C‑curve) protects a final subcircuit supplying mixed resistive and moderate inductive loads up to that current.
