What it is and what it does
The Siemens SENTRON 5SV6016-7KP40 is a combined arc-fault detection unit (AFDD) and miniature circuit breaker (MCB) in a single compact 1-module-wide housing. It protects final circuits against both overload/short-circuit (MCB function) and series/parallel arcing faults that can cause electrical fires. Rated 40 A with a C tripping characteristic, it handles common lighting, socket-outlet, and small-appliance loads on 230 V AC single-phase networks (1P+N). Breaking capacity is 6 kA per both IEC 60947-2 and EN 60898-1, sufficient for most residential and light commercial distribution boards where the prospective short-circuit current stays under that threshold. The C-curve means magnetic trip occurs at 5–10× rated current, so it tolerates moderate inrush from motors or capacitive loads without nuisance tripping.
Arc-fault detection range and selectivity
The AFDD function detects series arcs (e.g., loose connections or damaged conductors) from 2 A to 40 A, and parallel arcs (line-to-neutral or line-to-ground) from 50 A to 500 A. This wide detection envelope covers both low-energy tracking arcs and high-current fault arcs. The unit is short-time-delayed (no intentional delay) so it clears fast, but it coordinates with upstream overcurrent devices — the 6 kA rating ensures it interrupts faults within its own capacity without relying on a backup fuse or breaker.
Mounting and panel integration
Snaps onto DIN rail and occupies one modular width (18 mm). Depth is 68.5 mm, installation depth 70 mm.
Environmental and service life
Rated for ambient temperatures from -40 °C to +75 °C, with a 95% RH limit at 55 °C. Mechanical service life is 10 000 switching cycles typical. Halogen-free and silicon-free construction — important for clean-room or corrosive-environment installations where outgassing must be minimized. Overvoltage category III (fixed installation), pollution degree 2.
