What it is and what it does
The Siemens 5SY4206-7 is a 2-pole miniature circuit breaker from the SENTRON series, designed for branch-circuit overcurrent and short-circuit protection in industrial control panels and distribution boards. It carries a C-curve trip characteristic (magnetic trip between 5 and 10 times rated current), making it the right-sized spec for moderate inrush loads like motor starters, contactor coils, and small transformers where a B-curve would nuisance-trip and a D-curve would delay too long. Breaking capacity is dual-rated: 10 kA per EN 60898-1 for standard household/commercial duty, and 35 kA per IEC 60947-2 for industrial installations where higher fault current is expected. At DC (60 V nominal, 72 V max) it interrupts 15 kA per IEC 60947-2, and under UL 1077 it carries a 5 kA rating — useful for North American supplementary protection applications.
Mounting and integration
Occupies 2 modular-width units (36 mm) on a DIN rail, with a quick-assembly fastening system and any mounting position. Installation depth is 70 mm; overall depth 76 mm. The combined terminal at top and bottom accepts copper conductors, and the housing is sealable for tamper-proofing in metering or critical circuits. Rated for overvoltage category III and pollution degree 3, so it's at home in the main distribution panel, not just sub-distribution. IP20 with connected conductors — standard for enclosed switchgear; no washdown rating, so keep it inside the cabinet.
