What it is and what the ratings mean for your BOM line
The Siemens SENTRON 5SY4240-5 is a 2-pole miniature circuit breaker with a breaking capacity of 10 kA (AC) and 15 kA (AC and DC) at up to 72 V DC. The tripping characteristic is A, which has a higher magnetic trip threshold relative to the thermal element. It's designed for protecting sensitive electronics or long cables where inrush currents are low — not for motor circuits (you'd want C or D there). If your line has semiconductor loads or control transformers, this characteristic is the right call. Mounting is straightforward: quick assembly system, any position, 2 modular width units (36 mm wide), 76 mm deep behind the panel. Pollution degree 3 and overvoltage category III mean it's suited for industrial environments, not just residential.
Standards and compliance documentation
The 5SY4240-5 carries approvals to IEC/EN 60898-1, IEC/EN 60947-2, and UL 1077 (the UL rating is 5 kA). It's halogen-free and silicon-free — those are useful if you're working in a cleanroom or oxygen-rich environment. IP20 with conductors connected means the busbar or wiring has to be in place before the finger-safety rating applies, but that's standard for DIN-rail breakers.
