What this MCB is and what it does
The Siemens 5SY5240-7CC12 is a 2-pole miniature circuit breaker from the 5SY5 series, rated C40 (40 A trip curve C) for 440 V DC circuits with a 10 kA breaking capacity. That 10 kA interrupting rating at 440 V DC means it can safely clear a bolted fault on a DC bus or battery bank without welding its contacts or cascading failure upstream — a real concern on high-energy DC systems where arc extinction is harder than on AC. The C-curve (5–10× In) handles moderate inrush from DC motor drives or solenoid banks without nuisance tripping, while still protecting the branch wiring.
Where it fits in a panel
Snaps onto standard DIN rail inside a control cabinet or distribution board. The 2-pole form factor takes two module widths; plan your busbar and gland-plate fill accordingly. This is a DC-rated breaker, so don't swap it into an AC-only panel expecting the same arc-quenching performance — the DC rating is the one that governs here.
