What the B-curve and breaking capacity mean for your panel
The Siemens 5SY5463-6 is a 4-pole SENTRON miniature circuit breaker with a B-curve trip characteristic — it trips between 3 and 5 times rated current, which makes it the standard choice for resistive and general-purpose loads where inrush is modest (lighting, heaters, control transformers). The 10 kA breaking capacity per IEC/EN 60898-2 tells you it can safely interrupt a fault current up to that level at 400 V AC without welding contacts or cascading upstream. That same 10 kA holds for DC circuits per EN 60898-2, and the part is also rated 15 kA at DC per IEC 60947-2 — a useful headroom if your DC bus is stiff. Rated operating voltage is 400 V AC (multi-phase or single-phase) and 880 V DC, with a maximum DC voltage of 1 000 V. That DC rating is unusual for a 4-module-width MCB — it covers battery banks, UPS systems, and solar combiner boxes where the string voltage runs high. The part is universal-current rated (AC/DC) so you don't need a separate DC-specific breaker for mixed panels.
Physical fit and panel integration
The breaker occupies 4 modular width units (72 mm) on a DIN rail, with a depth of 76 mm and an installation depth of 70 mm. It mounts in any position and uses the quick-assembly system — clips onto the rail without tools. The IP20 rating applies with connected conductors, so it's standard for enclosed distribution boards. Vibration resistance per IEC 60068-2-6 covers ±1 mm at 5–25 Hz and 50 m/s² at 25–150 Hz, which is enough for most industrial panels unless you're mounting directly on a high-vibration pump skid.
Approvals and compliance
The 5SY5463-6 is certified to IEC/EN 60898-2 and UL1077, which means it's accepted in both IEC and North American panels (UL 1077 is the supplementary protector standard). It's halogen-free and silicon-free, so it won't outgas corrosive compounds in a sealed enclosure. The sealable design allows the installer to lock the toggle position — useful for lockout/tagout procedures on critical circuits.
