What it is and what the ratings mean
The Siemens SENTRON 5SY6040-7CC is a 1P+N miniature circuit breaker rated 40 A with a C tripping characteristic, breaking 6 kA per EN 60898. The C-curve means it trips between 5 and 10 times rated current — standard for general-purpose loads like lighting, socket circuits, and small distribution boards where moderate inrush is expected. The 6 kA breaking capacity at 250 V AC tells you it can safely interrupt a fault current up to that level without welding contacts or cascading upstream, which is the typical requirement for residential and light commercial sub-distribution. Rated current is temperature-dependent: 40 A at 30 °C, derated to 38 A at 40 °C and 37.2 A at 45 °C. If your panel runs hot, size the downstream load against the derated figure, not the 30 °C number.
Where it goes and how it mounts
Snaps onto standard DIN rail (35 mm), occupies one modular width (18 mm), and can be mounted in any position. Depth is 76 mm, installation depth 70 mm — fits standard distribution enclosures without a deep-can requirement. IP20 with conductors connected, so it belongs inside a panel or enclosure, not exposed to washdown or outdoor weather. Rated for overvoltage category III and pollution degree 2 — the usual spec for fixed-installation distribution boards in dry, non-conductive environments.
