What it is and what it does
The Siemens 5SY7416-7CC is a 4-pole miniature circuit breaker from the SENTRON series, rated 16 A at 400 V AC with a C tripping characteristic. It's built for branch-circuit protection in industrial control panels, distribution boards, and machinery — the C curve handles moderate inrush from motor starters and transformers without nuisance trips. The 25 kA breaking capacity per IEC 60947-2 means it can clear a fault up to that level without welding contacts or cascading upstream, which is the spec that governs coordination in a panel. For UL 1077 / CSA C22.2 No. 235 installations, the interrupting rating is 5 kA — that's the number to use when the job spec calls for North American listing.
Panel fit and mounting
Snaps onto DIN rail via the quick-assembly system — no tools needed for the rail mount, but the combined terminals at top and bottom accept screwdriver termination. The 72 mm width (4 width units at 18 mm each) and 76 mm depth mean it occupies the same footprint as a standard 4-pole MCB; the 70 mm installation depth leaves room behind the panel door. Mounting position is any orientation, and the IP20 rating (with conductors connected) is typical for enclosed distribution boards — not for wet areas. The breaker is sealable, so a panel builder can lock the toggle position after commissioning.
Environmental and compliance
Rated for ambient temperatures from -40 °C to 75 °C, which covers most indoor industrial enclosures and even unheated warehouses. Halogen-free and silicon-free construction — relevant for clean-room or semiconductor-adjacent installations where outgassing matters. Humidity derating is specified: max 95% RH up to 55 °C, tapering to 35% at 75 °C. The overvoltage category III rating means it's suitable for fixed-installation distribution boards, not just downstream equipment. Mechanical endurance is 10,000 switching cycles — typical for a panel MCB that sees infrequent manual operation.
