What it is and what it does
The Siemens 5SY8350-8BB08 is a 3-pole miniature circuit breaker (MCB) from the SENTRON series, rated 50 A with a D tripping characteristic and a 20 kA breaking capacity at 400 V AC per IEC 60947-2. This is a magnetic-only (no thermal trip) design — it reacts to short-circuit currents only, not to sustained overloads. That makes it a fit for circuits where overload protection is handled upstream or by a separate device, and the priority is clearing high fault currents fast. The D curve means the magnetic trip threshold is 10–20× In (500–1000 A), suited for loads with high inrush like motor starters, transformers, or welding equipment. For a 50 A breaker, that trip band starts at 500 A.
Key ratings and what they mean for fit
Breaking capacity: 20 kA at 400 V AC per IEC 60947-2. That is the maximum prospective fault current this MCB can safely interrupt without welding contacts or rupturing the case. In a 400 V panel with a transformer kVA rating that could deliver a 20 kA bolted fault, this breaker clears it. The UL 1077 / CSA C22.2 No.235 rating is 5 kA — lower because the North American standard uses a different test circuit and assumes a higher source impedance. Rated operational voltage: 440 V AC for single-phase or multi-phase operation, maximum 72 V DC. The DC rating is low — this is primarily an AC breaker. For DC circuits above 72 V, look for a DC-rated MCB. Mounts in any position, occupies 3 modular width units (54 mm total) on a DIN rail. Depth is 76 mm, installation depth 70 mm. The IP20 rating applies only with connected conductors — finger-safe when wired, not for wet environments.
Panel integration notes
Snap-on DIN rail mount, any orientation. The quick-assembly fastening system means it clips into place without tools and can be removed with a screwdriver push on the release tab. The combined terminal at top and bottom accepts both busbar and conductor — no separate feed-through lug needed. Sealable design allows the installer to lock the toggle position (on/off) with a padlock or seal wire, preventing unauthorized switching. Touch protection is built into the terminal design — fingers cannot contact live parts when conductors are connected. Halogen-free and silicon-free construction matters for panels in clean-room, semiconductor, or food-processing environments where outgassing can contaminate optics or sensitive electronics.
