What it is and what the ratings mean
The Siemens SENTRON 5TT5040-2 is a 4-pole insta contactor with four normally-open (NO) contacts, designed for switching resistive and light inductive loads in building and industrial control panels. The headline 40 A rating at 400 V AC is the operational current under AC conditions — meaning it can handle motor or heater loads up to that current without overheating, provided the ambient temperature and mounting spacing are respected. The control coil accepts both AC and DC, with a rated control voltage of 24 V DC, so it drops straight into a 24 VDC control bus without an extra rectifier.
Mounting and integration constraints
The 5TT5040-2 occupies 3 modular width units on a DIN rail. The 71 mm depth and 53.5 mm width mean it fits standard 4-module enclosure cutouts, but the manufacturer explicitly notes that spacers must be provided between contactors to ensure heat dissipation — so when ganging multiple units, leave a gap or use a ventilated backplate. IP20 finger-safe terminals are fine for enclosed panels; not for washdown zones.
