Safety output module for harsh environments
The Siemens 6AG1138-4FB04-2AB0 is a SIPLUS variant of the ET 200S F-DQ safety output module, built to survive the same crusher vibration and abrasive dust that kills standard electronics. It carries SIL 3 per IEC 61508 and Category 4 per EN 954-1, so it is rated for safety functions that demand fault-tolerant shutdown — think emergency-stop circuits, guard-door monitoring, or press-brake control in a mill. Four transistor outputs, each rated 4 A up to 40 °C and 5 A up to 55 °C, with a module total of 6 A max. That means you can drive contactors or solenoid valves directly without an interposing relay, as long as the load current per channel stays inside the thermal limit.
Wiring and fault detection in the panel
Snaps onto the ET 200S DIN-rail profile — the 30 mm width leaves room for adjacent I/O slices in a crowded enclosure. Wiring is screw terminal; the 24 V DC load supply feeds the module separately from the backplane bus, which draws 28 mA max at 3.3 V DC. Built-in wire-break detection (lower limit 12 Ω, upper limit 1 kΩ) and short-circuit detection let the module flag a failed field connection before the safety function is compromised. The group error SF (red LED) pulls the diagnostics bus — the PLC sees the fault without scanning each channel.
Thermal limits and cable runs
The output current derates at the high end: 4 A at 60 °C, same as at 40 °C, but the 55 °C point allows 5 A — so if the cabinet runs hot but stays under 55 °C, you get the extra amp per channel. Cable runs up to 500 m shielded or unshielded — long enough to reach field actuators across a conveyor line or a processing floor. Typical power loss is 3.5 W, manageable without forced cooling in a standard IP20 cabinet.
