Safety-rated logic in a compact footprint
The 6AG1215-1AF40-5XB0 is a Siemens S7-1200 CPU 1215F — a failsafe controller that runs both standard and safety programs on the same hardware. It supports LAD and FBD programming with failsafe libraries, so a single CPU handles the machine logic and the safety interlocks without a separate safety relay or redundant controller. PROFIsafe communication is built in as both client and server, meaning this CPU can exchange safety telegrams directly with remote F-I/O or drives over PROFINET. No additional gateway needed for safety-over-Ethernet.
Fieldbus and protocol flexibility
Native support for MODBUS TCP/IP and UDP covers the common plant-floor protocols. For legacy PROFIBUS networks, an external CM 1243-5 module is required. Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) is supported as a client, so the CPU can be part of a ring topology that self-heals on a cable break — typical for production lines where a single fault cannot be allowed to drop the network. LLDP and SNMP enable standard network management and topology discovery, useful for commissioning and asset tracking.
Environmental range and power requirements
The 24 V DC supply must stay above L+ minus 4 V DC minimum; a 24 V rail that dips below 20 V during a motor start will cause a brownout. The backup time for retentive data is 480 h typical — enough to ride through a long weekend shutdown without losing counters, timers, or recipe values.
Memory and I/O configuration
Integrated 4 Mbyte memory stores the user program, data blocks, and the system firmware. The bit memory address area is limited to 8 kbyte, but the full set of forced variables and online diagnostics are available. 16 digital inputs are on-board, dynamically configurable — the same physical terminals can be set as sink or source depending on the field wiring, which saves a terminal block when mixing sensor types. Analog inputs support 0 to +10 V and 0 to 20 mA with adjustable ranges, making it straightforward to connect pressure transmitters, temperature probes, or flow meters without external signal conditioners.
