Conformal coated CPU for harsh environments
The Siemens 6AG1215-1BG31-4XB0 is a S7-1200 CPU 1215C with conformal coating, rated for an extended ambient temperature range of -40 to 70 °C. This is the variant you spec when the standard 0–60 °C CPU won't survive the cabinet environment — think outdoor enclosures, cold stores, or washdown zones where condensation is a given. The conformal coating protects the PCB against moisture, dust, and chemical vapors. It is not a potting or a sealed enclosure — the CPU still needs an IP20-rated cabinet — but it buys you years of life where standard boards would track corrosion between pins.
4 MB work memory, PROFINET, and programming languages
This CPU carries 4 MB of integrated work memory, enough for medium-sized applications with data logging, PID loops, and a few communication connections. The code size is limited only by the available RAM, not a fixed byte limit. It supports LAD, FBD, and SCL programming languages, so you can mix ladder logic for discrete control with structured text for math or sequence blocks. The onboard PROFINET interface runs as both client and server, and MODBUS TCP (client/server) and UDP are also supported — no extra communication module needed for most plant-floor networks.
