Extended-temperature RS-485 slice for harsh environments
The Siemens 6AG1241-1CH30-5XB1 is a SIPLUS variant of the S7-1200 CB 1241 communication module, based on the standard 6ES7241-1CH30-1XB0 but with conformal coating and an extended operating temperature range of -40 to +70 °C. This makes it the go-to choice for environments where standard electronics won't survive — think cold storage, outdoor cabinets, or process areas with condensation and aggressive atmospheres. It draws 50 mA from the 5 V DC backplane bus, so the power budget impact on the S7-1200 CPU is minimal. The module supports Freeport protocol, meaning you can implement custom serial communication or Modbus RTU (via user programming) without an additional processor.
Conformal coating and environmental resilience
The conformal coating (IPC-CC-830A Class A) protects the PCB assembly from moisture, dust, and chemical exposure. The module is resistant to commercially available coolants and lubricants, including diesel and oil droplets in the air, and meets ANSI/ISA-71.04 level GX group A/B for corrosive gas environments (excluding trichlorethylene).
