RS-232/485 gateway for S7-1500 racks
The 6AG1541-1AB00-7AB0 is a CP 1542-1 communications processor that adds a serial RS-232 or RS-485 interface to a SIMATIC S7-1500 system. It mounts directly on the S7-1500 mounting rail and draws its power from the system backplane, consuming 0.6 W typical. The interface supports 4-wire full-duplex RS-422/485 connections but does not offer 4-wire multipoint mode. Maximum transmission rate is 115.2 kbit/s, with cable runs up to 1,200 m and support for up to 32 slaves on the bus. An 8 kbyte telegram buffer handles message lengths up to 4 kbyte, with configurable parity (none, even, odd, always 1, always 0, any) and stop bits (1 or 2). Fast startup mode is supported, and the module provides diagnostic alarms and wire-break detection.
Temperature range and installation orientation
Rated for -40 °C to 70 °C in horizontal installation, with startup from -25 °C including condensation and frost tolerance. In vertical installation the maximum ambient drops to 40 °C — a derating that matters for cabinets with stacked modules and limited convection.
Addressing, diagnostics, and LED feedback
Supports standard Modbus RTU addressing from 1 to 247 and extended addressing up to 65,535, with 7 or 8 data bits per character. I&M data (I&M 0) is available for asset tracking in TIA Portal. Diagnostics function is built in, with a green RUN LED, yellow LEDs for RxD and TxD activity, and no hardware interrupt capability. Isolation is tested at 500 V between the interface and the backplane.
