What this repeater does in a PROFIBUS line
The Siemens 6AG1972-0AA02-7XA0 is a SIPLUS DP RS-485 repeater that regenerates and amplifies PROFIBUS signals, extending segment length and allowing more nodes on the network. It supports transmission rates from 9.6 kbit/s up to 12 Mbit/s, auto-sensing the baud rate of the segment it is inserted into. This is the SIPLUS variant with conformal coating per IPC-CC-830A Class A, making it suitable for environments with condensation, corrosive gases, or salt spray — not a standard indoor-only part.
Temperature range and environmental tolerance
The conformal coating and Type 1 fouling protection per EN 60664-3 mean it tolerates humidity, dust, and aggressive atmospheres better than the base model. The unit also carries qualification to ANSI/ISA-71.04 for process environments — Level GX Group A/B (excluding trichlorethylene), Level LC3 salt spray, and Level LB3 oil resistance. This is the spec that matters for chemical plants, offshore platforms, or food processing zones.
Power and connection requirements
Supply voltage is 24 V DC nominal, with a permissible range of 20.4 V to 28.8 V DC. The repeater draws up to 100 mA without load at the PG/OP socket; with a 24 V / 100 mA load on that socket, total draw reaches 200 mA. Electrical connection for supply voltage is via a terminal module; PROFIBUS cables connect through two terminal blocks. The housing is IP20, so it mounts inside a control cabinet or junction box — not exposed to direct washdown.
Lifecycle status and sourcing note
This part carries a manufacturer status of NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs). It remains available for existing installations and BOM lines, but new projects should evaluate the standard 6ES7972-0AA02-0XA0 or current-generation PROFIBUS repeaters.
