What this PM-E power module does
The Siemens 6ES7138-4CA50-0AB0 is a PM-E power module for the ET 200S distributed I/O system, supplying 24 to 48 V DC to the load circuit and providing diagnostics via the backplane bus. It occupies a single 15 mm wide slice on the ET 200S rail, with a depth of 52 mm and height of 81 mm, fitting into the standard ET 200S mounting profile. Rated for 10 A continuous at 60 °C ambient, this module handles the load current for a cluster of ET 200S electronic modules downstream. Typical power loss is 0.5 W, keeping the thermal contribution to the enclosure minimal.
Diagnostics and protection features
The module reports group errors via a red SF LED and indicates the presence of load voltage with a green PWR LED, giving the commissioning engineer immediate visual feedback at the rail. Missing load voltage can be configured to either disable outputs or generate a diagnostic alarm, a useful option for cold-chain or safety-instrumented applications where a voltage loss must be flagged rather than silently tolerated. Reverse polarity protection is built in, so a swapped L+ and M on the field wiring won't damage the module. Short-circuit protection must be provided externally — Siemens recommends an automatic circuit breaker with tripping characteristic B or C, sized to the branch.
Isolation and wiring notes
Galvanic isolation is provided between the rated load voltage and the backplane bus, and between power modules, tested at 500 V DC. The module draws up to 12 mA from the load voltage L+ for its own electronics, negligible against the 10 A load capacity. Data width on the backplane is 3 bytes, which the ET 200S interface module maps into the process image for diagnostics and status.
Lifecycle and sourcing
No successor or replacement part has been announced; the 6ES7138-4CA50-0AB0 is the current PM-E module for 24-48 V DC ET 200S applications.
