What this module does on the S7-200 rack
The Siemens 6ES7222-1HF20-0XA0 is an EM 222 expansion module that adds 8 relay outputs, each rated 2 A, to a compatible Siemens base unit. It snaps onto the DIN rail alongside the CPU and connects through the ribbon-cable bus connector — no separate fieldbus node, no IP address to set. Each relay output switches up to 2 A, so it handles small motor contactors, solenoid valves, and indicator loads directly. The relay form gives you isolation between the PLC backplane and the field wiring.
Relay output rating in context
Eight relay outputs at 2 A each means the module can switch up to 16 A total across all channels, but the 2 A per-channel ceiling is the limit for any single load. That 2 A at 230 VAC (resistive) or 2 A at 24 VDC (resistive) covers most pilot-duty loads in a control panel — think contactor coils, signal lamps, and small valve actuators. Because these are relay outputs, the switching frequency is lower than a solid-state output — you would not use this module for a high-speed pick-and-place or a PWM valve. But for on/off control of pumps, conveyors, and batch valves on a bottling or canning line, the relay gives you a clean open and the isolation the field wiring needs.
