What this module is
The Siemens 6ES7223-1PH22-0XA8 is a spare-part digital I/O module for the S7-200 CN programmable controller, designated EM 223. It provides 8 digital inputs rated 24 V DC (sink/source) and 8 relay outputs rated 2 A per channel. It is approved only for the Chinese market (CN) and carries CE certification. Typical power loss is 3 W. The module has no short-circuit protection on the outputs, so external fusing or circuit breakers are required for the load circuits.
Transistor vs. relay: the 6ES7222-1BF22-0XA0 difference
A common cross-shop is the transistor-output 6ES7222-1BF22-0XA0 (8 DO, 0.75 A, 24 V DC). The relay-based 6ES7223-1PH22-0XA8 is not a form-fit-function swap. Output type differs — relay contacts vs. solid-state — and the relay module delivers 2 A per channel versus 0.75 A. The physical width is 71.2 mm compared to 45 mm on the transistor variant, so the relay module occupies two extra slots on the DIN rail. If the original BOM used the transistor module, the relay module does not drop in. Wiring changes are required: relay outputs need separate commons and flyback suppression for inductive loads.
Physical fit and wiring note
The module measures 62 mm deep, 71.2 mm wide, and 80 mm tall. It plugs directly into the S7-200 backplane (only S7-22X CPUs). The relay outputs are rated 2 A maximum per channel; total current per common group is not specified, so conservative grouping is recommended. No short-circuit protection is built into the outputs — add external fusing or a circuit breaker to each load circuit.
