8 analog inputs, 14-bit, Sigma Delta — what it means for a legacy S7-300 rack
The Siemens 6ES7331-7TF01-0AB0 is an SM 331 analog input module with 8 differential current inputs, each digitised by a Sigma Delta converter to 14-bit resolution. It occupies a single S7-300 slot, 40 mm wide, and draws 60 mA from the 24 VDC load supply plus 120 mA from the 5 VDC backplane bus. The 20-ms integration time at 50 Hz rejects mains ripple cleanly — the module is parameterisable to 16.6 ms at 60 Hz or 100 ms for higher noise suppression. Each channel accepts 0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA signals with a 140 Ω input resistance, and the module supports both 2-wire and 4-wire transducers. Shielded cable runs up to 800 m are within spec, which covers most field-to-panel distances in a plant. The 20-pin front connector is ordered separately — the module does not ship with one.

Dimensions are 40 mm wide, 125 mm high, 117 mm deep — it occupies one slot and leaves room for airflow in a crowded enclosure. IP20 rated, so it belongs in a clean, dry cabinet, not in a washdown zone. Wiring terminates on a 20-pin front connector (type 6ES7392-1AJ00-0AA0 or equivalent). Each channel pair uses the same return path — there is no channel-to-channel isolation, so shared return wiring is the norm. The module is short-circuit proof on the input side, and a group error SF LED (red) plus per-channel fault indicators give fast diagnostics when a loop goes down.
