What the SM 374 does that a real I/O module can't
The Siemens 6ES7374-2XH01-0AA0 is a simulator module for the S7-300 rack — it lets you test logic without wiring field devices. You configure it via DIP switches (16 of them) to act as 16 digital inputs, or 16 digital outputs, or 8 inputs plus 8 outputs; the 16 LEDs show the state of whichever channels you're using. It draws 80 mA from the 5 V DC backplane bus, so it loads the rack power supply about the same as a compact I/O slice, and dissipates only 0.35 W — no extra heat to manage in the enclosure.
