CPU 412-1 — what it is and what it does
The Siemens 6ES7412-1XJ07-0AB0 is a CPU 412-1 for the S7-400 rack-based controller family. It handles 244 bytes each of process input and output image, with 48 total connections and 16 connections per interface. Programming languages supported include LAD, FBD, STL, SCL, CFC, and GRAPH — covering ladder, function block, structured text, and continuous function chart workflows within STEP 7.
Key ratings and what they mean for fit
The FM (function module) capacity is limited by the number of slots and the number of connections — meaning the total count of FM modules you can install depends on the physical rack slots available and the connection budget per interface. This is a hard constraint for panel layout: you cannot exceed 16 connections per interface, and the overall system limit is 48 connections. The CPU supports MPI and RS 485 communication natively, with routing available when the interface is active. The operating temperature range is 0 °C to 60 °C, so this CPU is suited for climate-controlled enclosures but not for unheated outdoor cabinets or freezer environments. The ATEX II 3G Ex nA IIC T4 Gc certification means it is approved for use in Zone 2 gas atmospheres (non-sparking, Category 3G), which is relevant for chemical, pharmaceutical, or oil & gas installations where flammable gases may be present under abnormal conditions. The CPU is isolated and carries CE mark and cULus approval — covering European and North American regulatory acceptance. The cULus mark means the component is certified to both Canadian and US safety standards, so it can be specified into panels destined for either market without additional agency review.
Communication and system function limits
This CPU does not support DPV1, which means it cannot handle the extended PROFIBUS DP V1 services for acyclic data exchange and alarm handling. For applications requiring DPV1, a different CPU variant is needed. The CPU supports SFB 52 (RDREC) and SFB 53 (WRREC) for data record read/write, limited to 8 per interface and not more than 32 across all external interfaces. Similarly, SFC 58, SFC 59, SFC 51 (RDSYSST), SFC 13, SFC 55, and SFC 103 are each limited to 8 per interface — except which is 1 per interface. When using PROFINET IO mode via a CP 443-1 communication processor, a maximum of 4 CPs is allowed in the central controller, with no mixed operation of different CP 443-1 types. For point-to-point communication, CP 440 and CP 441 modules are limited by the number of slots and connections. Forcing is supported, which is useful during commissioning to override process values without modifying the program.
Physical integration and deployment context
The CPU measures 25 mm wide, 290 mm high, and 219 mm deep — a standard single-width S7-400 module that snaps into the rack. The depth is the key dimension for enclosure clearance: you need at least 220 mm of usable depth behind the front panel to accommodate the module and its cabling. The RS 485 interface uses a 9-pin D-sub connector; the MPI port shares the same physical connector but uses a different protocol.
