CPU 414-3 PN/DP — what it does and what it needs
The Siemens 6ES7414-3EM06-0AB0 is a CPU 414-3 PN/DP for the S7-400 rack. It handles 244 byte of process inputs and 244 byte of outputs, with a total of 64 SFBs available for the application code. The CPU supports LAD, FBD, STL, SCL, GRAPH, and CFC programming languages, so whatever your team's preferred IEC 61131-3 dialect, this unit can compile it. On the fieldbus side, it carries an integrated PROFINET interface with IRT (isochronous real-time) for deterministic motion or high-speed logic, plus a DP port for PROFIBUS DPV0. It also supports UDP and TCP/IP communication through the PROFINET port via loadable function blocks. Note that MPI is not available on this CPU — if your legacy programming cable expects MPI, you will need an adapter or a different CPU variant. The module is 50 mm wide, 290 mm tall, and 219 mm deep — it occupies one slot in the S7-400 rack. It is isolated, and it supports forcing of I/O for commissioning and troubleshooting. The GSD file for PROFINET integration is available from Siemens support.
Panel integration and communication limits
The CPU mounts in a standard S7-400 rack (UR1 or UR2). The 50 mm width means it takes one slot; plan for the 290 mm height to clear the cabinet door or gland plate above the rack. The depth of 219 mm includes the front connector — ensure at least 100 mm clearance behind the rack for the backplane bus and cabling. For communication processors, the CPU supports up to 4 CP443-1 modules in the central controller, but you cannot mix a CP443-1 EX40 with EX41/EX20/GX20 types in the same rack. PtP communication via CP 440 or CP 441 is limited by slot count and the number of connections. The CPU supports routing when the PROFINET interface is active, and it can handle 8 RDREC, 8 WRREC, 8, 8, 8 RDSYSST, 8, and 8 blocks simultaneously.
