CPU 416-2 FP07 — what it is and what it does
The Siemens 6ES7416-2FP07-0AB0 is an S7-400 CPU of the SFB (Siemens Function Block) type, designed for high-speed communication and deterministic control in medium-to-large automation systems. It supports CFC, FBD, LAD, SCL, STL, and GRAPH programming languages, giving the controls integrator flexibility to match the team's preferred IEC 61131-3 dialects. The FM (Function Module) capacity is limited by the number of slots and connections in the rack, not by a fixed count — so the practical limit depends on the backplane and power supply configuration you pair it with. This CPU handles 244 bytes each of process input and output images, which is right-sized for a mid-size line or machine cell without over-provisioning. For data exchange, it supports up to 8 RDREC and 8 WRREC operations per interface (SFB 52/53), with a total cap of 32 across all external interfaces. The same per-interface limit applies to SFC 59 and SFC 58. That matters when you're coordinating multiple PROFIBUS or PROFINET segments — plan your read/write load per interface, not just the aggregate.
Where it fits in the panel and the plant
The CPU occupies a 25 mm slot width on the S7-400 rack, with a height of 290 mm and depth of 219 mm. That's a standard S7-400 footprint — it drops into any existing UR1/UR2 rack without re-drilling the gland plate or re-laying the backplane wiring. Operating temperature range is 0 °C to 60 °C, which covers most control cabinets without forced cooling, but watch the ambient if the panel sits near a furnace line or in direct sun. The isolated design helps reject common-mode noise from nearby drives or welding equipment. For PROFINET IO mode, a constraint: you can install up to 4 CP 443-1 communication processors in the central controller, but no mixed operation of different CP 443-1 types is allowed. If you're standardizing on one revision, that's fine — just don't mix old and new CPs in the same rack.
Compliance and approvals — what ships with the part
This CPU carries cULus approval for North American installations, CE marking for the European market, and ATEX II 3G Ex nA IIC T4 Gc certification for Zone 2 gas areas. That ATEX rating means it can be installed in a non-hazardous area with connections to Zone 2 classified locations — useful for chemical or oil & gas peripheral equipment. The GSD file for PROFIBUS configuration is available directly from Siemens support (ID 113652), so you can integrate it into any master class 1 tool without requesting documentation separately.
Sourcing reality — what to expect
This is an established S7-400 CPU that is sourced to order against an RFQ. It is not a current-production flagship, but it remains specified in many installed lines where the control architecture is frozen. If you are filling a BOM for a new panel, verify that your engineering team has the latest STEP 7 version that supports this FP07 firmware level.
