Overview
The 6ES7417-4HL01-0AB0 is a Siemens CPU module with 64 KB of onboard RAM, expandable to 20 MB via memory card. It carries a PROFIBUS DP interface and MPI as default, supporting up to 8,192 digital inputs and 8,192 digital outputs across the rack.
Function & operation
The PROFIBUS DP interface handles distributed I/O and drive communication at up to 12 Mbps. MPI is set as the default protocol for programming and HMI access. Two integrated RS-485 ports are present, though the module does not support multicomputing — it runs as a single CPU in the rack. Fault-tolerant FM (function module) capability is rated at 64 connections, limited by slot count and wiring. The CPU supports up to 64 CP LAN and 64 CP PtP connections, with no IM 467 interface.
Integration & mounting
Two integrated RS-485 ports are accessible via the front connector. The PROFIBUS DP interface uses a 9-pin D-sub. No on-board Ethernet — all plant network connectivity requires an external CP module.
Memory & backup
The 64 KB RAM is backed by a battery (all data retained). Without battery, data is lost on power-off. Retentivity covers MB 0 to MB 16383. An expansion slot accepts a RAM memory card for additional program/data space up to 20 MB total. The module supports retentive data areas and an adjustable preset count (Z 0 to Z 7). The per-slot maximum for I/O data is 244 bytes.
Performance & capacity
With 8,192 digital inputs and 8,192 digital outputs addressable, this CPU handles large I/O counts typical of process or factory automation. The 64 KB work memory is the base; the 20 MB expandable ceiling (10 MB program, 10 MB data) supports complex logic and data handling. The module is isolated and adjustable. Power draw from the 5 V backplane is 1.8 A typical, 2 A maximum, with 10 W dissipation.
