32 kB process image and extended temperature range
The 6ES7516-3AN02-0AB0: The CPU 1516-3 PN/DP maps 32 kbyte of inputs and 32 kbyte of outputs into the process image — all I/O data is available in the cyclic update without explicit DP read/write calls. That image size suits medium-scale automation with several hundred distributed I/O points across PROFINET and PROFIBUS. Rated for -40 °C to 70 °C ambient, this CPU handles unheated enclosures in cold climates or cabinet-mounted near hot equipment. The wide span covers most industrial and infrastructure sites without a separate conditioned cabinet.
Network services and redundancy
DCP and DNS are enabled — the CPU can be discovered and named on the PROFINET network without a memory card pre-configured. This speeds first power-up: the TIA Portal scans the network, assigns the device name, and downloads the project. MRP is supported with the CPU acting as MRP Automanager, Manager, or Client per IEC 62439-2 Edition 2.0. In a ring topology the media-recovery time stays under 200 ms, which keeps the I/O update alive through a single cable break. MODBUS TCP is handled natively — no separate communication processor is needed for talking to drives, HMIs, or third-party RTUs over the Modbus protocol. The CPU also carries an RS 485 interface on X3 for legacy serial devices or point-to-point links.
Integrated control and expansion limits
Two PID controllers are built in: PID-Temp for temperature loops with integrated optimization, and for valve positioning. These run directly on the CPU without an external controller module — the loop tuning parameters are set in the TIA Portal and downloaded with the project. A maximum of 8 communication modules (CMs or CPs) can be inserted for PROFIBUS, additional PROFINET, or Ethernet interfaces. This limits the total fieldbus expansion to 8 slots, which is sufficient for most medium-size lines but worth checking if the design calls for multiple redundant networks.
