The Siemens 6ES7518-4AX00-1AB0 is a high-end S7-1500 CPU 1518-4 built for large automation networks. It carries a -40 to 70°C operating range, so it fits into unconditioned panels and outdoor cabinets without derating. The process image is 32 kbyte for inputs and 32 kbyte for outputs, which maps a substantial I/O count directly into the CPU without extra modules. The I²t rating of 0.4 A²·s defines the CPU's inrush energy; size your power supply and upstream breaker accordingly — a typical 24 VDC supply with 10 A rating covers this, but any multiple-CPU backplane should be summed.
Network and protocol mix
PROFINET interface supports MRP Media Redundancy (Manager and Client) for ring topologies, but IRT is not available — so this CPU is suited for standard real‑time applications, not isochronous motion. An additional 1 Gbps port is available only at the X3 interface for high‑speed data backbones. Built-in MODBUS TCP and an RS-485 port (X4) cover legacy fieldbus and simple serial connections without needing a separate communication module. Up to 8 additional CPs/CMs (PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Ethernet) can be inserted for further expansion.
Programming and firmware
Supported languages: LAD, FBD, STL, SCL, GRAPH, and CFC. Built-in PID controllers for temperature and valves, along with forcing, hardware clock, and I&M data, support commissioning and asset tracking.
