Multi-axis power module with integrated safety
The Siemens 6SL3111-4VE21-6FA1 is a SINAMICS S120 Combi Power Module that takes a 400 V three-phase input and delivers 16 kW of output power across four axes: one rated at 18 A, and three at 9 A, 5 A, and 5 A respectively. This multi-axis architecture packs the drive electronics for a small machine cell into a single module, saving DIN-rail space and reducing cabinet wiring compared to individual drives. The external air cooling design means the module rejects heat to the cabinet ambient — plan your enclosure thermal budget accordingly, especially if the module is mounted in a sealed or low-airflow panel. Extended Safety Integrated functions are supported on this module, enabling safe torque off and other safety-rated stop functions without a separate safety relay or controller. For a commissioning engineer, this means the safety loop can be wired directly to the module's safe inputs, reducing component count and simplifying the safety validation paperwork. The safety functions are integrated into the drive firmware, so the same engineering tool (SINAMICS Startdrive or SIZER) handles both the motion and safety configuration.
The Combi Power Module is designed for external air cooling — the fan draws cabinet air across the heatsink. Ensure the panel's intake and exhaust grilles are sized for the module's specified airflow, and keep at least 100 mm clearance above and below the module for unimpeded convection. The four-axis output architecture means the module feeds four separate motors; each motor cable must be routed with its own shield clamp at the cabinet exit to maintain EMC compliance per the SINAMICS S120 EMC installation guidelines. The 400 V three-phase input is direct to the module's line terminals — no external line reactor is mandatory for most applications, but a line reactor is recommended if the supply impedance is low or if multiple drives share a common transformer. The extended Safety Integrated functions require a separate 24 V DC supply for the safety electronics; this supply must be from a PELV source and should not share a circuit with the main DC-link power.
