Drive module for machinery builds
The ABB 3ABD00046199 is an ACS380-series LV AC machinery drive module, order code ACS380-040C-038A-4+K454. It delivers 18.5 kW output at 38 A in normal (light-overload) duty, with a heavy-duty rating of 15 kW at 32 A — so the same drive covers both a 15 kW hard-coupled load and an 18.5 kW variable-torque pump or fan on the same BOM line, no hardware change. Input is 380...480 V three-phase, 47.5...63 Hz, and the unit is rated IP20 with an open-type NEMA enclosure — intended for cabinet mounting where the enclosure provides the environmental seal. Frame size R4 tells the panel builder the mounting footprint and gland-plate layout before the drive arrives.
Duty ratings and what they govern
Three current ratings are listed: 38 A normal-use (In), 36 A light-overload (IlD), and 32 A heavy-duty (IhD). Specifying the wrong duty class is the most common BOM mismatch on this part. The heavy-duty output (15 kW at 32 A) is 81% of the normal-duty rating — a typical headroom margin for applications that cycle at rated torque continuously. If your load profile is steady-state at 18.5 kW, confirm the motor's service factor covers the normal-duty curve.
IP20 and open-type NEMA mean the drive needs a cabinet. Plan for forced airflow across the heatsink if the enclosure is sealed; the R4 frame dissipates heat through the backplate, so mounting on a metallic panel with good thermal contact helps derating. The module form factor is a standalone unit — not a plug-in slice — so it occupies its own footprint on the backplate. WEEE category 5 (small equipment under 50 cm) applies at end of life; no special disposal routing beyond local WEEE compliance.
