30 A, 4-pole, 120 VAC coil — what this ABB A16 contactor does
The ABB A16-40-00-84 is a 4-pole IEC contactor rated for 30 A continuous at 600 VAC, with a 120 VAC coil. It belongs to the A-Line series on the A16 frame and carries four normally-open main contacts. The 30 A rating means it can switch motor loads up to roughly 7.5 kW at 400 VAC in AC-3 duty, or handle resistive heating loads at full 30 A. The 4-pole layout lets you switch three phases plus a neutral, or run two independent loads off one contactor. The 120 VAC coil is standard for North American control panels running off a control transformer. DIN rail mounting means it clips onto standard 35 mm rail inside the enclosure — no screw holes to drill.
Panel fit and what to watch for
The A16 frame is a compact IEC form factor — it occupies about 45 mm of DIN rail width per pole. The 120 VAC coil draws roughly 6 VA holding power, so a 50 VA control transformer can drive several of these contactors plus pilot lights. All four main contacts are N.O., so if your circuit needs a normally-closed power pole, this contactor won't work without adding an external auxiliary block. The A-Line series accepts snap-on auxiliary contact blocks that mount on the front or side.
