The ABB AF38-30-00-11 is a 3-pole IEC contactor rated at 50 A, part of the AF- Line series in the AF38 frame. The 50 A rating is the conventional free-air thermal current (Ith) — the current the main poles can carry continuously in open air. For motor switching, you derate to the AC-3 utilization category; the 50 A frame typically lands around 37-40 A for standard three-phase induction motors, so size it for the motor FLA, not the Ith number. The coil accepts 20-60 VAC or VDC, which is a wide-range electronic coil — no need to swap coils for different control voltages, and it holds in down to about 18 V, giving brownout ride-through.
This is a panel-mount contactor — snaps onto DIN rail or bolts directly to a backplate. The AF38 frame footprint is standard for the series; auxiliary contact blocks snap onto the front or side without tools. The 3-pole configuration handles three-phase motor loads, resistive heating banks, or capacitor switching with the right derating. No built-in aux contacts on this variant — order the add-on block separately if you need N.O./N.C. feedback to the PLC.
