Motor branch-circuit protection – 8-12 A adjustable overload
The ABB MS116-12 is a 3-pole manual motor starter with an adjustable overload range of 8-12 A, covering motor full-load amps from 8 A up to 12 A. The knob-operated open-style unit is designed for direct-on-line motor starting and branch-circuit protection in control panels. The 8-12 A range means this starter protects motors with nameplate FLA in that band — set the dial to match the motor current, and the bimetal overload tracks the thermal load. Below 8 A or above 12 A, you step to the next MS116 variant.
Active production – no obsolescence concern
ABB's MS116 series is a widely installed platform across IEC markets, so replacement units and accessories (auxiliary contacts, shunt trips, enclosure kits) are readily available through distribution.
Panel integration – 3-pole open-style footprint
The open-knob form factor (no enclosure) mounts directly onto a DIN rail or panel backplate inside a motor control center or distribution board. The 3-pole construction switches all three phases simultaneously, which is standard for three-phase motor branch circuits up to 12 A FLA. Because it is a manual starter (not a contactor), the operator uses the knob for on/off and overload reset — no coil power required. This suits local disconnect applications where a control transformer or PLC signal is not available.
