It serves as a manually operated load-break switch with integrated overcurrent protection for distribution and motor feeder circuits in industrial panels. The TMA trip unit provides thermal protection against overloads and magnetic (instantaneous) protection against short-circuits, with the magnetic pickup adjustable across a range to coordinate with downstream devices. This makes it suited for feeder protection where selectivity and coordination are required.
The 250 A frame size requires adequate clearance for cable bending radii and heat dissipation — allow at least 50 mm free air above and below the vent slots when enclosed in a gland plate or IP-rated cabinet. The TMA trip unit's thermal element responds to ambient temperature; if the switch is installed in a warm enclosure (above 40 °C), the continuous current rating must be derated per the ABB XT4 application guide. The magnetic pickup adjustment is accessible on the front face without removing the arc chamber.
